Identity and Continuity of Somaliland
The present-day Republic of Somaliland is the same legal entity that achieved
independence from the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland on 26
June 1960. The designation “Republic” has been used since 1991, following the restoration
of sovereignty after Somaliland expelled the illegal occupying authority of Somalia. This
change in designation does not affect the continuity of the State’s legal personality
